The Papillon got its name from the French word for
butterfly because its fringed ears look like butterfly
wings. It?s bouncing, flittering gait reinforces the
resemblance further. It is a small, friendly, intelligent
dog that is tougher than it looks and loves outdoor exercise.
A gentle and affectionate dog, lively, vivacious and charming.
Playful and amusing but can also be calm, patient, gentle
and dignified. Steady and silent. Loves to be cuddled but
also likes to romp outdoors.

There are two varieties: the erect-earred dog as we see
today. Or the original, called the Phalene, or the ?night
moth? or drop earred.

The papillons origin is that from the Continental Toy
Spaniel and with a recorded history in Europe going back nearly
700 years. This tiny breed is recognized in 13th through 15th
centry Italian frescoes. It was bred down from hunting dogs
to provide companionship for the ladies of royalty.

It is often said that the Papillon is a big dog in a little
dog's body. They can do virtually all that a larger dog can do,
but with less effort, upkeep, and space requirements. Truly,
their unique beauty goes far beyond their glorious
butterfly ears.

"Gizmo & Kodi"

Several years ago I saw a man holding this tiny dog with
the biggest of ears I?d ever seen. He told me it was a
?papillon?. So began my search to find out about these
dogs and where a breeder was. After some searching I
found a local breeder and was lucky enough to acquire
my first pap, a sable and white who I named Gizmo. He
looked like Gizmo from the Gremlins movie. He even made
all kinds of squeaks and grunts. So the name was very
fitting. He stole my heart. Since paps are like potatoe
chips?you can?t have just one. Several years later I was
fortunate to get a tri colored pap from the same breeder.
They are true brothers ...they have the same parents. Our
new fella was named Kodi. These furbabies have filled our
lives and hearts with so much fun and love.
